For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head . . . because of the angels.

In the last few decades there has risen much confusion around this particular verse, as well as the whole of the subject matter being addressed here by Paul to the Corinthians. All the same, this verse is part of God’s Holy Word and is intended to be both informative and instructive, though tucked neatly away here in a very illuminating passage of scriptures.

Since it is part of God’s Word that never changes, believers today are still obliged to give the utmost prayerful consideration as to its application to their lives. So as lights in the midst of a dark and blind world, they may properly “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things” that they say and do, to give the glory and honor due to the Blessed Name of our Glorious Savior Jesus Christ.

Nonetheless, for a variety of reasons “believers” nowadays simply choose to ignore Paul’s two hundred and ninety-eight instructive words, (counted in the King James prior to verse sixteen) and imprudently conclude “we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.” In so doing, they treat Paul’s instruction here as completely irrelevant to them, as if it was written without reason, a complete waste of time and parchment.

Nevertheless, up until the last 40-50 years the majority of “the churches of God” did keep the custom of women wearing head coverings to some degree. This shows that most believers in today’s Church have lost the very attribute for which Paul was praising the Corinthian church in the first place, “I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

So, what was Paul saying, “we have no such custom, neither the churches of God?” Well, what was the beginning of that verse?

1 Corinthians 11:16  But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

What this verse is saying is simply this, as believers and members of the Body of Christ, we are not supposed to be contentious, for only by pride comes contention.

Though Jude said to “earnestly contend for the faith,” that does not mean we are to be contentious or belligerently quarrelsome. There is a big difference between earnestly reasoning the perceptual truths of God and argumentatively rejecting them out of personal preference or ignorance.

Still, many discard parts of God’s word simply because they don’t understand them and therefore don’t feel they are important, or that it doesn’t apply to today’s church. These poor servants of Christ would miserably fail to follow what has been called “the Gospel of Mary,” when she told the servants at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, “Whatsoever He says unto you, do it.”

The Gospel isn’t a smorgasbord buffet-style religion where everyone gets to pick and choose what they want to do. They who would come to Christ, hoping to have the atoning blood of the Lamb of God applied to their lives, must do as did the Jews in Egypt; they must consume ALL of the sacrificial Lamb WITH its bitter herbs . . . not just the choice tender desirable parts.

Exodus 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roasted with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. And you shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning you shall burn with fire.

1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin..

To refuse to do “whatsoever He says unto you” leaves one as guilty as those preachers failing to keep the Great Commission, “Go you therefore, and teach all nations . . . to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.”

So, as I stated before, until recently the majority of “the churches of God” kept the custom of women wearing head coverings. Therefore, one would do well to ask, “Why then, and not now?” What is different? Are today’s liberal churches more enlightened? Or have they simply moved further from the faithful application of God’s perceptual truths, to now abusing the liberty they have from sin’s dominion through grace as a liberty of the flesh?

We do well to remember what Paul said to the church of Corinth, “I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.”

What were the ordinances? Perhaps an even better question would be what exactly is an ordinance? A simple way to find out what Paul meant is to study how the Greek word which was translated “ordinances” in this verse was translated elsewhere in scripture. For out of the thirteen times the word was used in scripture, only this one time was it translated “ordinances.” The other twelve times it was translated “tradition” or “traditions” as seen below-

  • Matthew 15:2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
  • Matthew 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
  • Matthew 15:6 And honour not his father or his mother, [he shall be free]. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
  • Mark 7:3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash [their] hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
  • Mark 7:5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
  • Mark 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, [as] the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
  • Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
  • Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your traditions, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
  • 1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered [them] to you.
  • Galatians 1:14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the tradition of my fathers.
  • Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:6  Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

God used the Apostle Paul to deliver ordinances, or traditions, which he intended to be observed by the Church. However, while some at Corinth kept them, others had elected not to. This division in keeping the observance Paul had commanded had led to a contention between them, and that is not surprising since the true foundation of the subject matter is one of authority.

It is evident Paul had some who were strong resisters of his authority in the Corinthian church as testified by scripture-

1 Corinthians 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? 12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.

2 Corinthians 11:12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

Paul was trying to set things in proper order and lay a proper foundation for their understanding the correct and godly authority in the Church. Hence Paul wrote, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” It is evident here that Paul was rehearsing the divine structure, or order of authority to them, which is established further by the phrase “For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.”

The Bible in Basic English states it this way, “For this reason it is right for the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.” So we can readily see the woman ought to have her head covered while praying or prophesying, i.e. teaching the things of God. But what does it mean “because of the angels?” Just what does a headcovering, or the covering of the hair, have to do with the angels?

Well, let us look through a porthole provided by scripture into the throne room of heaven-

Isaiah 6:1  In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.

Here we can see the angel’s used two of their wings to cover their face, which meant they held their wings over their heads and concealed their faces and with two covered their feet. But why?

The answer is simple, they did not wish for their God-given beauty to detract from the glory, honor and praise due to God alone. This will become more evident as we continue, for in the scriptures there is a detectable similarity between the gifts God gives to the woman and those He gave to Lucifer before he fell from God’s grace.

Ezekiel 28:13 You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the ruby, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the turquoise, and the emerald, and gold. The workmanship of your tambourines and of your flutes was prepared in you in the day that you were created. 14 You were the anointed cherub that covers, and I had put you in the holy height of God where you were.; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you.

What do we see in these verses here?

First we can see that God gave to the anointed cherub a glorious apparel to complement the position in which he was placed in God’s creation.  His garment, or covering, was a divine gift of a majestic adornment given to honor him.

What about the woman? –

1 Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Who gave this “glory” to compliment women? The Creator did.  Doubtless when God created Eve she was given long hair as an adornment to complement her God-given beauty.

As we can see from both passages, both the jewel-studded garment of the anointed cherub and the woman’s hair are said to be given by God as a glorious “covering.”

Still, that does not answer the question, “What does women wearing a head covering have to do with the angels?” Perhaps we should review what happen with Lucifer and what caused him to have his negative conversion and to fall out of God’s graces.

We can see what happen to Lucifer in Ezekiel’s prophetic words against the king of Tyrus, who by pride of position, wealth, power and beauty, became more and more covetous.  The king of Tyrus foolishly sought to go beyond the bounds of what was lawful for him, and being covetous had sinned, God was going to cast him down. For this prophecy of Ezekiel concerning the king of Tyrus in his pride is merely a repetition of exactly what Lucifer had done and reveals how sin first entered God’s holy creation.

Ezekiel 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:

The king of Tyrus had exalted himself in his own eyes, but that did not change in reality what he truly was.  He was a mere man and was going to die like a man –

Ezekiel 28:9 Will you yet say before him who kills you, I am of the gods? But you are a man, and not God, in the hand of him who kills you. 10 You shall die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers. For I have spoken, says the Lord Jehovah.

Now God could have ended this prophecy here.  It conveyed all it needed to about the king of Tyrus sin.  Yet God continued to reveal more through Ezekiel for our admonishment and understanding of sin’s induction into creation.

Ezekiel 28:11 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 12 Son of man, lift up a lament over the king of Tyre, and say to him, So says the Lord Jehovah: You seal the measure, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the ruby, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the turquoise, and the emerald, and gold.

In these passages it is revealed how the king’s personal life and pride was a prophetic mirroring of Lucifer’s prior to his fall.  We can safely determine this by the following statements.

  • “You have been in Eden the garden of God” – The king of Tyrus was never in the Garden of Eden . . . but Lucifer was.
  • “the day that you were created” – The king of Tyrus was born, not created . . . but Lucifer was.
  • “You were the anointed cherub” – We see in verses 2 and 9 that God clearly says of the king “thou art a man.”

There are other parts that could be expounded on here, but before we do, let’s look through another similar prophetic window of scripture at the fall of Lucifer, the anointed cherub.

Isaiah 14:4 you shall take up this song against the king of Babylon and say, How the exacter, the gold gatherer has ceased! 5 The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers 6 who struck peoples in wrath, a blow without turning away, ruling the nations in anger, a persecution without restraint. 7 All the earth is at rest and is quiet; they break out into singing. 8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at you, the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since you have fallen, no woodcutter will come up against us. 9 Hell from below is moved for you, to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the dead for you, all the he-goats of the earth. It has raised from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 10 All of them shall speak and say to you, Are you also as weak as we? Are you like us? 11 Your pride is brought down to the grave, and the noise of your harps. The maggot is spread under you, and the worms cover you. 12 How you are fallen from the heavens, O shining star, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart, I will go up to the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. 14 I will go up above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High. 15 Yet you shall be brought down to hell, to the sides of the Pit.

Again, we have a prophecy against a king, this time the king of Babylon. And again, he is going to be brought low and judge by the God of heaven and earth. Why? Because of his pride, his life as well has mirrored the pride of Lucifer; having extended himself beyond God’s given and lawful boundary of rule and influence.

But what do we see in Lucifer’s heart by this prophecy of Isaiah? We discover his intention to rise up out of his place and to usurp the authority above Him, even God.

Isaiah 14:13 For you have said in your heart, I will go up to the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. 14 I will go up above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High. 15 Yet you shall be brought down to hell, to the sides of the Pit.

What was it that Lucifer allowed to deceive him and into thinking he could be “like the Most High?” This is where it is helpful to return to Ezekiel’s prophecy.

Ezekiel 28:7 Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may behold you.

The anointed Cherub Lucifer’s heart was lifted up because of his beauty and he had corrupted wisdom by reason of his brightness.

What does this reveal? It reveals that God had given to the anointed cherub a perfect and beautiful countenance that radiated with the glory of God. But when Lucifer began to take pride in his countenance and his beauty he “corrupted wisdom.”

What does that mean, he “corrupted wisdom?” What is it that phrase is trying to tell us? First we need to understand what exactly is the foundation and heart of wisdom.

We know that wisdom finds application in all areas of life and relationships from parenting, friendships, business, economics, from following to leading. Yet the greatest relationship one must be concerned about is by far their relationship with God. What do the scriptures tell us?

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

The foundation of true life-preserving wisdom is “the fear of God.”  Yet by scripture we can see how in the heart of the anointed cherub, that when he became prideful over his God-given beauty, it stirred his heart to covet the very position of praise and honor reserved for the Most High Himself alone.  He foolishly cast off fear and wisdom, by reasoning within his own heart as to why he too should not share a place of equality with God and thus began plotting to ascend to the positioned reserved for God alone.

Isaiah 14:3 For you said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Gazing upon his own beauty and brightness, Lucifer compared himself to the manifested glory of God and foolishly believe he too was worthy of the worship of the rest of the angels. Instead of having humility with his gift of beauty, he felt he was deserving of the majestic apparel God had given him. And so, Lucifer rejected his position in the spectrum of authority by attempting to usurp the authority of God, seeking to steal the praise that God alone is worthy of.

It is “for this cause” ought the woman to have power on her head, because of the angels. God has given the woman her hair to be a natural adornment of beauty. Why else do most men have a natural admiration for long hair?

However, when we who are the creatures of our glorious Creator gather together for prayer or worship or the reading and speaking of God’s word, let the woman with humility cover her head, as do the angels in the very presence of God, willfully concealing her “glory” lest it detract from the glory due God. Likewise a man should not cover his head, “forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God.” To do so would be to dishonor his head, i.e. Christ Himself.

Each of us, whether male or female, have been given positions of honor and gifts from God, yet we must learn to be faithful in the place which God has given us to serve Him, being fitly joined together serving Him while we adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. The woman is to submit to the authority of her own husband “as unto the Lord.”  The husband is to love his own wife, “as even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”  Thus we adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

Yet when a woman refuses to submit to her husband, the angels shutter with fear as they recall with utter clarity Lucifer’s introduction of sin into God’s holy creation. This is why the scriptures plainly teach that women are not to usurp the authority of God has given unto men and holds accountable to God for his family.

Now having shared all this, I must clarify that I do not feel a women needs to wear a head covering constantly. As the scripture says, “bodily exercise profits little, but godliness profits withal,” and unless the heart is right it matters little what one does outwardly. But if a woman wishes to go on to a “more perfect way” of walking in the light of God’s word, then as the scriptures say, while “praying or prophesying,” she should prayerfully consider keeping” the ordinances” Paul delivered unto the churches. I would also further clarify that I feel “prophesying” implies also the instruction or teaching of God’s word to the younger women so that they too might learn how to adorn the gospel of Christ in all things.

I must admit, I have had many women express to me that they do not “feel any unction of the Holy Spirit” to begin covering their heads. I would answer that with pointing them back to what we all do have, the written word of God. Isn’t that enough? Are we one moment to be defending the scriptures as “the Word of God” and then the next minute failing to acknowledge what is written?

Honestly, most of the time I do not feel “any unction of the Holy Spirit” to do many things, nor do I need such an “unction” if the Holy Scriptures has already given me light and a path for me to walk in. It is simply my duty to walk in the light . . . while I have the light.

John 12:35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walks in darkness knows not where he goes.

Ephesians  5:8 For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Lord: walk as children of light.

Mark 4:23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 24 And he said unto them, Take heed what you hear: with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. 25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

I pray this may be a blessing to those seeking to glorify of Lord in all things. Remember . . .

Proverbs 13:10  Only by pride comes contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

1 Corinthians 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

For those interested, I had addressed the distinct roles of the man and woman in my post “Why God Created Us Male And Female.” Peace.

    Dear Brother,

I would just add that much of this is merely the issue of “authority” and “godly order”. If we examine the term “power” in the Strongs it is very clearly an issue of these things with regard to the woman and power, just as it was spoken of by God in the garden after the fall of man.

Gen. 3:16…..and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

    Strongs def of “power”:

power of choice, liberty of doing as one pleases
    leave or permission
    physical and mental power
the ability or strength with which one is endued, which he either possesses or exercises
the power of authority (influence) and of right (privilege)
the power of rule or government (the power of him whose will and commands must be submitted to by others and obeyed)
    universally
    authority over mankind
    specifically
    the power of judicial decisions
of authority to manage domestic affairs
    metonymically
a thing subject to authority or rule 4c
    jurisdiction
    one who possesses authority 4c
    a ruler, a human magistrate 4c
the leading and more powerful among created beings superior to man, spiritual potentates
a sign of the husband’s authority over his wife
the veil with which propriety required a women to cover herself
the sign of regal authority, a crown

      Hello Sister Suzanne,

While the Greek word is used in 93 verses in the NT, it is translated power/powers 75 percent of the time, not power in an explosive sense of power, rather a permissive sense, as a delegated influence: authorization/authority, jurisdiction, and liberty through subjection or as a right or liberty. This power comes indeed from being under authority as it is used in the following verse-

Mt 8:9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

The power to command stems from the position under authority. Almost 25 percent the rest of the time the word was translated authority/authorities. Other verses giving insight into the word can be seen by how it was translated in the following verses-

1Co 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this “liberty” of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.

Heb 13:10 We have an altar, whereof they have no “right” to eat which serve the tabernacle.

Re 17:13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and “strength” unto the beast.

Re 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have “right” to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

      Peace,
      William

With regard to the Strongs definition I listed, it was the one for the particular word in the passage posted:

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

It was the Strongs reference #1849

Just FYI…the listing was for that particular word.

I truly do appreciate your input Suzanne. I am sure you know me well enough that I am not taken back by those who disagree with me either though, so long as there is still the humble nobility to openly reason each position. More than once have I shared the blessing of mutually converging closer to the truth with another with whom I was not in full agreement with. Often times both are blessed as open discourse opens new insight and exposes faulty concepts that one’s sincere belief has obligated them to hold to.

I love reasoning with reasonable people. Still, I have not forgotten both your husband’s and your love and zeal for God. It is refreshing to hear from you after so many years. for funsies though I am going to add a full compare of several translations of the verse for all of our benefits –

(KJV) For this cause ought the woman to have power on [her] head because of the angels.
(NASB) Therefore the woman ought to have [a symbol of] authority on her head, because of the angels.
(NIV) For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.
(NRSV) For this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
(RSV) That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels.
(ASV) for this cause ought the woman to have [a sign of] authority on her head, because of the angels.
(NAS95) Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
(BBE) For this reason it is right for the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
(WEB) For this cause the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels.
(DBY) Therefore ought the woman to have authority on her head, on account of the angels.
        (YLT) because of this the woman ought to have [a token of] authority upon the head, because of the messengers;
(NKJV) For this reason the woman ought to have [a symbol of] authority on [her] head, because of the angels.
(MKJV) For this reason the woman ought to have authority on [her] head because of the angels.
(MNT) For this reason the woman ought to have authority over her head, because of her [guardian] angels.
(Oracl) For this reason, ought the woman to have a vail on her head, on account of the messengers.
(TCNT) And, therefore, a woman ought to wear on her head a symbol of her subjection, because of the presence of the angels.
(WNT) That is why a woman ought to have on her head a symbol of subjection, because of the angels.

Thanks Kim for your kind words. Sadly it isn’t a message that is well receive, because people view it as a legalism rather than humble witness to the glory of God. I rarely speak of head coverings because people tend to go off on tangents assigning all sorts of classifications to me, i.e., legalistic and under the law . . .

Certainly there are many other areas nowadays that need to be addressed which many believers need to recognize as truths of the Gospel beneficial to embrace and liberating to obey. Those who have matured and settle things in their hearts are usually the ones who recognize the wisdom of the cross and humbling one’s self as a key to true liberty.

Again, thanks for your kind words,

    Dear Brother,

If I may, I might also add that this issue of order has become most out of order in regard to the teachings and authority within the church body gatherings/worship. I have witnessed firsthand that the order has been corrupted due to the fact that within the church itself the women have usurped the men’s authority and have greater influence upon the pastors and thus the instruction has become corrupted within the sanctuary.

“We all, male and female, have been given positions of honor and gifts from God, yet we must learn to be faithful in the realm which God has given us to serve Him, being fitly joined together serving Him while we adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. The woman is to submit to the authority of her own husband “as unto the Lord.” ”

(Your quote above also brings this to mind with regard to the women having the covering of her husband within the church gatherings:)

1 Cor. 14:34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

Ok, I’m off the tangent now and I’ll stop interjecting in your blog, but I had to post that last point.

Thanks for letting me post brother.

    In His Love,
    Suzanne

In regards to the “traditions” that you have been talking about, personally, I do not rely on Strong’s Greek lexicon, or any other lexicon for any other language for that matter, because they are not part of the Scripture in any way. I let the Bible interpret the Bible, and let the Holy Ghost teach me the marvelous things of God. The word “tradition” appears in a negative light in all the references you provided, except in 2 Th 2:15 and 2 Th 3:6. The word “ordinance” is also used with a positive connotation in 1 Co 11:2. Based on the occurrence alone, the word “tradition” doesn’t sound much like a positive word.

You stated that the woman needs to cover her hair to prevent others from being distracted from the “the glory” that is given unto her, or to prevent her from being proud (as Lucifer did). Proverbs 16:31 says “The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.” Does this mean that a woman must dye her hair or be covered with a burka in order to prevent “the crown of glory” from showing, each time she prays or prophesies?

If the “covering” referred to in 1 Co 11 is talking about a piece of fabric (or hat), how do you explain the commandment of God for the priests to have their head covered with “bonnets” while ministering in the temple? Notice in these passages how the Bible specifically says that the covering is a piece of fabric made into a “bonnet” to be worn on the head by men (priests).

Ex 28:40 “And for Aaron’s sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty.”
Lev 8:13 “And Moses brought Aaron’s sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; as the LORD commanded Moses.”
Ezekiel 44:18 “They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.”

Now, compare these three verses with 1 Co 11:4 “Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.”

If the “covering” in 1 Co 11 represent something to cover the head (hide the hair), that would render the passages from the Old Testament inconsistent with the rest of the Scripture, and Jesus said “the scripture can not be broken.” (John 10:35)

“Yet when a woman refuses to submit to her husband, the angels shutter with fear as they recall with utter clarity Lucifer’s introduction of sin into God’s holy creation.”
Actually God says that by man sin entered into the world:
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

Had Lucifer and other angels sinned alone, without making man sin, they would have still gone to hell, since hell was prepared for the Devil and his angels (Matt 25:41). God never intended to save angels from the damnation of hell:
Hebrews 2:16 “For verily he (Jesus) took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.”

1 Co 11:15 puts a lid on the whole debate:
“But if a woman have LONG hair, it is a glory to her: for her HAIR is given her for a COVERING” The covering a woman must wear in order to have “power on her head” is the LONG hair.

      Hello Gabriel,

Please forgive the delayed reply; I was buried beneath a mountain of other responsibilities. I appreciate the honest and open contribution, for only through such discourse can reasonable people gain at least a respect for another’s conviction, if not a mutual understanding as well.

I acknowledge your assertion that you personally do not need study aids because “they are not part of scripture in any way,” and that you simply let the Bible interpret the Bible. That sounds good and very spiritual and all, especially when you assure me that you “let the Holy Ghost teach me the marvelous things of God.” However, the wisdom of God is scripturally discernable to have distributed His diverse gifts to the various members of the Body of Christ so as to obligate them to submit one to another in the fear of God if they are to experience the fullness that He has for His people. I am sure you do not need me to expound on the different functions of the assorted components of the body and how Paul speaking under the unction of the Holy Ghost stated clearly that one member cannot say it has no need of another if it is to experience richness of the love and unity of the faith which comes from thorough study of God’s Holy Writ.

It is through God’s people coming together and prayerfully reasoning things that all the things we each know in part can be properly assembled by the Holy Spirit. Remember, He labors first and foremost to bring forth fruit unto perfection in our lives as He leads “us” into all truth. That being said, I will also assert with clarification however, that I too “do not rely on Strong’s Greek lexicon, or any other lexicon for any other language for that matter.” My point of clarification would be that while I may not “rely” on them, neither do I ignore the validity of the science of translation nor Strong’s godly commitment to endeavor to know the truth and to allow others to partake of his labors. However, while to the pure all things are pure, to the defiled and deceived all things can be misused, manipulated and rendered impure.

Regarding your comment that “the word ‘tradition’ appears in a negative light” in some of the verses is irrelevant to the point at hand. The use of the word establishes neither truth nor error, rather the practice/custom/ or ordinance to which it references in light of the context of scripture. The fact that the translators used “ordinances” over “traditions” would seem an indicator that Paul established a decree/regulation that was to be observed by the church.

In your second paragraph you apply an assertion to me I did not make. Nowhere did I say “the woman needs to cover her hair to prevent others from being distracted from the “the glory” that is given unto her, or to prevent her from being proud.” The object is not one of avoiding distractions for others, rather one of godliness; the humble willingness to allow all the focus to be on God’s glory alone. I personally feel the absence of a scriptural description for what type and style of head covering is the spirit of grace avoiding the legalism of what is long, complete or sufficient enough, it is a simple prophetic action of self abasement before God, similar to knelling or being prostrate before Him. To ask me about dying the hair or the burka is not only needless, but borders on an distasteful assertion to my position that was never expressed or implied.

My whole post was about Paul’s reasoning of “because of the angels,” a point you have not only failed to address, but ignored entirely. Despite your own failure to answer a question, you further ask how I would explain the linen bonnets of the priest while ministering in the temple. My answer would be simple, the linen would represent the righteousness and crown of salvation for which they minister unto God on behalf of the people, and it was as the scriptures state “for glory and for beauty.” However, they were but prophetic priests, mere shadows of the ultimate High Priest who would come in His own righteousness and replace them as He ministered salvation unto His people. Aaron and the rest had to have a symbolic representation for what was merely imputed to them.

You make an interesting comment, “If the “covering” in 1 Co 11 represents something to cover the head (hide the hair), that would render the passages from the Old Testament inconsistent with the rest of the Scripture, and Jesus said “the scripture cannot be broken.” This comment further shows me you are continuing to attach meanings to my words which I have not intended and taking them to places I have not referred. Nowhere does scripture say a man’s hair is his glory, rather that man’s whole image and creation is that of God and intended to be a witness to God’s glory. But it does say the women is “created for the man” and is thus a representation of man’s glory, while her hair is her own glory. It is her own glory a godly women conceals to honor her “head.”

I acknowledge that Adam is responsible for the sin that entered the world and disrupted God’s intended place for him (man), his sin being passed upon all men. However, my words were precise when I stated that Lucifer introduce sin into God’s holy creation which resulted in part of the angelic host being cast into chains of darkness and cast out of heaven. Obviously the serpent was in the garden tempting man to sin because Lucifer had already sinned.

Your final assertion that “1 Co 11:15 puts a lid on the whole debate” does not make it so. You have not presented any feasible explanation of Paul’s words “because of the angels.” Failing to address them is not allowing the Bible to interpret the Bible, nor did Paul state such as mere word filler to make it all sound spiritual. They are words of God whereby we live and must labor to find understanding, dismissing them does not answer them, make them irrelevant, or cause them to go away.

      Peace.

    Hi William,

I wish to be careful about how I present this as I am fully aware that it is not my place to teach a man, and at this time I am not desiring to teach you, but rather to let you know that while I have given much prayer to God about this passage and when I was reading your most wonderful article a light bulb came on and I am wondering what you think about this.

    3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ;
    and the head of the woman is the man;
and the head of Christ is God.

The status of authority has been clearly laid out in the above verse.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

The above verse clearly states that men are to have short hair. I believe that when a woman cuts her hair short like a man she is symbolically presenting herself as an equal to a man. The scripture clearly states the reason why a man must not have long hair, “forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. I am guess that a lot of women don’t realize what they are doing when they cut their hair short and how disrespectful they are being to God in this action.
8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

I think a woman’s power is found in her obedience to God. All through the Old Testament there are promises of blessings, prosperity and freedom from sickness and our enemies if we obey God’s voice, but disobedience brings a curse of sickness, poverty and many ill things. When we are sick and poor we are aware of how powerless we are.

20 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. Exodus 23

      Hello NJ,

I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read the article, and I think it is indeed a ordinance given by God from the beginning and reinforced by the Apostle Paul as still applicable to the church. The reason I think it made into the scriptures (apart from divine sovereignty) is because among the Corinthians believers there were some who had previously been participants of some of the vilest of pagan idolatry with its lewd and sensuous worship practices and were for the most part ignorant of the true oracles of God. Paul was simply confirming the need for them to recognize that we all have a part in “adorning the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.” That perceptual truth is a silver thread that runs through every aspect of the Gospel and our obedience to it and I address it again in at least these two other articles, “Justified in the Spirit” and “Why God made us male and female.”

I remember years ago a sister in the Lord with long hair shared how when she was in the presence of some younger brothers in the Lord who had not yet overcome the lust of the eyes, that she appreciated her long hair because she could pull it to the front over her shoulders and it would drape over her breasts as a natural covering. It was enough to conceal her and the younger brothers appreciated their deliverance from temptation.

However, I would have some reservation saying a hearty “amen” to your comment that verse 7 “clearly states that men are to have short hair” as the emphasis is not the hair, but a covering, be it a veil, turban or hat of any sort. Likewise, since the long hair on a woman is given her for her glory it (her hair) therefore needs to be covered as did the angels in Isaiah 6 their glory while in God’s presence.

But back to my earlier comment concerning the pagan idolatry with its lewd and sensuous worship practices, it has been taught in some Christian circles that the temple prostitutes were both male and female. The females often having their heads shaved while the males had long hair to effeminate their appearance. Some have felt that this may have been the cause for Paul’s addressment of cut and uncut hair because it was a willful intent to adorn the role of the other gender in a homosexual manner and for this reason Paul addressed it a shame for men to have long hair and the women’s being cut or shaven. Whether that is the actual reason we can neither absolutely affirm nor deny. Nevertheless, we can see the clarity of “adorning the doctrine of God our Savior in all things” within this passage.

I will however assert that it is indeed a shame on both gender’s part that in and out of marriage there is often a failure to properly “adorn the Gospel” of Christ so loving His church and she (the church) obeying Him in all things. It is part of our witness and being both light and salt to the world. Sadly the head covering seems to have fallen to the wayside as out of date and unnecessary even though both history and scripture have long served as undeniable foundations to this ordinance. There is never any reward in disobedience to God, be it in ignorance or willful. Faith is best demonstrated to be genuine when it is a witness of love’s faithfulness to the truth and can only there unquestionably work for God’s glory and honor.

      Peace,

      William

      • Hi Mr William. (In my culture to call a person generationally older than you by name is disrespectful. Being as I dont know your age in respect to mine, I thought I’d air on the side of caution :-) )

Thank you.for your wonderful and insightful article!

From the plain reading of this passage )ie without commentaries). It seemed clear to me that
        1. The covering was something we should still do
        a) because of the angels (and they still exsist today)
        b) because it reflected a spritual truth, that even nature reflected. Which is that a womans head should be covered hence the long hair

Following on from that. I concluded that in the spritual application, ie when we come together to worship God.
Gods glory is the only thing that matters and/or only thing that should be on display.
Hence if woman, was man’s glory. Her hair, her own glory. Then by her covering her hair. She would be covering “mans glory”, symbolically.

I have never fully understood what the angels had to do with it, except that I had read that in the book of revelations, that the angel of the church represented the pastor.
So I concluded that maybe in this passage, the covering of the hair/head, which the verse says was a symbol of authority. Was a way to symbolically honour the pastor, ie that she wasn’t usurping!

That was just my take on the verse. However your teaching on the angels make more sense of the verse. Thank you!

Would love to hear your thoughts on my view on the glory point I made in particular.

        Hello Clare,

Thank you so much for the sensitivity in spirit and most gracious words.

When the Scriptures speak of man being the “Glory of God” it is only in the sense that we are created in His image and likeness, and are to reflect Him in the attributes which Christ revealed unto as pertaining holiness and charity. Hence the first thing the Apostle Peter exhorts us do is to add to our faith virtue, that by seeking after these things through willful humbling of ourselves and seeking to do all to the glory of God we might be transformed into His people who are called with the glorious calling to partake of His divine nature.

2 Peter 1:2 – Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue…

But this can only be realized in our lives when our faith “works by love” in obedience to His revealed will. That is why the first word that was translated “knowledge” in verse 2 is actually a different Greek word than the one likewise translated knowledge in verse 3. The first Greek word actually means to acknowledge, to place into action the things you know as compared to the simple awareness of something. To have knowledge of God’s will and yet not do it would exclude one from having His grace and peace being “multiplied” in their life.

But back to the woman being “the glory of the man,” it is the prophetic role of the woman to represent man in his righteousness with God, and her hair is given her for her glory. Thus to cover her hair while praying and prophesying is a sign of humility of not wanting to detract from the glory of God, whom the man and pastor represents, and in so doing she openly acknowledges by her actions the delegated authority of God, who is the head of Christ, who is the head of man, who is the head of the woman.

However, the headcovering is separate from the hair given for her glory, which is indeed a “covering,” but it is a covering given her for her glory just as all those precious stones that were given by God as a covering for the glory of the anointed cherub who fell because of his pride which took him out from his designated and limited place of service in God’s heavenly kingdom.

But without humility, wearing a headcovering will simply hide one’s hair and have no true benefit, just like without repentance baptism only leaves one wet and the same. Thus we need faith working by love in “acknowledgement” of God’s will for each of our lives to have His grace and peace multiplied; not being envious of each other, but submitting ourselves unto God and each other in the fear of God and in fervency of heart loving Him and each other. For God is love….

So I agree that a woman wearing her headcovering in church does indeed show that it is not her desire to usurp neither the pastor’s nor her father’s nor husbands delegated authority over her.

        Stay Blessable!

        William
